Ads move from a placement to a conversation

OpenAI has announced a set of changes to ChatGPT Ads, led by a test of Sponsored Agents. The OpenAI announcement, dated 16 September, says a person who clicks an ad may choose to begin a clearly labelled conversation with a business-sponsored agent. That conversation is separate from ChatGPT’s independent answer and from the user’s original chat. The test is limited to selected advertisers in the United States, not a feature every business can launch today.

The format is a significant shift from an ad that simply links to a page. A prospective customer could ask about dimensions, compatibility or service options before deciding whether to visit a seller. For the advertiser, the opportunity is a more useful response to genuine interest. For the user, the key condition is that the commercial relationship remains unmistakable throughout the exchange.

The boundary around a sponsored answer

OpenAI says Sponsored Agents are clearly labelled and user-initiated after an ad click. Those safeguards are important because the agent represents the business’s interests. It may help explain a product, but it should not be mistaken for a neutral assessment of competing options. A person making a consequential purchase should still verify claims in the seller’s terms and other relevant sources.

Separating the sponsored conversation from the original chat also limits a potential source of confusion. An advertisement should not quietly become the voice of the assistant the user was already relying on. The announcement describes this separation as a product design choice; its effectiveness in live use will depend on the interface, disclosures and how clearly users understand where one conversation ends and the other begins.

The initial US-only test means OpenAI has not established international availability. An Australian advertiser or user should not assume the format is already present locally, even if other ChatGPT features are available.

Campaign building through prompts

The release also describes an Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT Work. Advertisers can use natural-language requests to create, update and analyse campaigns, drawing on a website or brief as a starting point. They can ask for performance explanations and recommendations rather than move through every campaign field manually.

A prompt interface can lower the effort of creating a draft campaign, but it raises questions about authorisation and review. A mistaken audience, budget or claim can have real cost. Businesses should establish which actions are drafts, which require approval and how changes are recorded. A fast workflow is useful only if the advertiser can see exactly what will be published or spent.

OpenAI separately says Ads Manager will suggest copy and imagery based on a landing page and objective. Advertisers can review and edit those suggestions. That review should include factual claims, brand standards and whether the landing page actually supports what the ad promises.

Customisation and partner integrations

An opt-in text-customisation feature can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translate copy to a user’s preferred language. This could improve relevance, but it also makes the final wording less static. Advertisers will need to know what variants are generated, how they are checked and whether translated claims preserve the intended meaning.

OpenAI identifies HubSpot as its first CRM integration and Shopify as its first ecommerce integration for ChatGPT Ads. HubSpot users can connect an ads account, manage campaigns, track performance and follow up on leads in the context of their customer data. The Shopify app is available to US merchants at the announcement date, with an international launch in markets where ChatGPT Ads is available planned for 23 September.

That future Shopify date does not imply global advertising access. It is conditional on existing market availability. Businesses should confirm account eligibility and the precise permissions granted to either integration before connecting customer or catalogue information.

What to watch in the test

A credible assessment of Sponsored Agents should look beyond click-through rates. Users need to understand that they are talking to a sponsored system; answers should stay within verified product information; and the path back to independent information should be easy. Advertisers should assess whether conversations lead to informed decisions rather than merely longer engagement.

Businesses also need a correction path when catalogue facts change. An agent describing an unavailable item or outdated service term can mislead customers at scale. Keeping the sponsored experience tied to current approved product information is an operational requirement, not simply a copywriting preference.

For campaign-management tools, the useful measures include time saved after review, error rates and the ability to reverse changes. Generating variants quickly is not inherently valuable if staff spend more time correcting unsupported claims or resolving customer confusion.

OpenAI’s announcement joins conversational ad experiences with AI-assisted work for marketers. Its material news is concrete but bounded: Sponsored Agents are a selected US test, advertiser creation tools are rolling out, and partner integrations have distinct eligibility dates. Keeping those boundaries visible is essential to reporting the change accurately.
