OpenAI has announced a partnership with CodeAI aimed at giving high-school students and educators more practical support for learning about artificial intelligence. The initiative arrives alongside ChatGPT for Teens and is framed around a simple distinction: access to AI tools is not the same as understanding how to use them well.

The partners say their work will focus on helping students understand how AI works, assess its answers critically and use it responsibly. That emphasis matters because AI is already part of many students’ day-to-day study and creative work, while formal instruction about its limitations, risks and appropriate uses remains uneven.

From using AI to understanding it

OpenAI describes the partnership as a way to close the gap between widespread AI use and AI literacy. The announcement cites a finding that only a minority of high-school leaders report that all students receive the technical knowledge needed to understand AI in class. The proposed response is not a single lesson or a product rollout. It is a group of programmes intended to connect students, teachers, learning specialists and child-development experts.

That is a useful framing for schools. Generative AI can help a student brainstorm, explain an unfamiliar concept or revise a draft, but it can also produce plausible errors, present an incomplete perspective or encourage over-reliance. Students need habits that make the tool more useful: checking a claim against reliable material, asking what information is missing, recognising uncertainty and knowing when an answer should be set aside.

OpenAI says the work is designed to support those habits rather than position AI as a substitute for teachers or families. The company’s announcement repeatedly places adult guidance and student judgement at the centre of the programme.

What the partnership includes

Over the coming year, OpenAI and CodeAI plan to establish a joint advisory council. It will bring together expertise in child development, youth public policy and learning science to provide continuing advice on emerging risks, responsible AI practices and changing education needs. According to OpenAI, that feedback is intended to inform the future development of ChatGPT for Teens.

The partners will also use CodeAI’s Hour of AI programme to introduce students to the basics of thoughtful and responsible AI use. For students wanting to build, the new Builders Challenge is intended to offer a national showcase, mentorship from OpenAI staff and recognition for projects made with AI. The announcement also points to CodeAI’s free, year-long AI Foundations high-school course, where OpenAI experts may act as a resource on systems, safety and responsible use.

A separate Career Journeys component will give students opportunities to hear from OpenAI researchers, engineers and leaders. The practical value of that element is that it broadens the picture of AI work beyond prompting. Students can see that the field includes research, security, evaluation, product design, policy and education, as well as software engineering.

A companion to ChatGPT for Teens

The partnership coincides with ChatGPT for Teens, OpenAI’s dedicated experience for younger users. OpenAI says it includes protections intended to support healthy use and additional controls for parents. The partnership adds an educational layer: not merely providing a teen-oriented service, but helping young people learn how to interrogate AI outputs and decide when the technology is appropriate for a task.

For educators, the important question will be how these resources fit local teaching goals and safeguarding policies. Schools will still need clear expectations around assessment, privacy, age-appropriate use and disclosure of AI assistance. A national programme cannot resolve those decisions for every classroom, but a credible literacy curriculum can give teachers and students better language for making them.

Why AI literacy is becoming foundational

AI literacy is increasingly closer to information literacy than to a niche computer-science topic. It includes understanding that models predict and generate rather than simply retrieve facts; that an answer can sound confident without being correct; and that the quality of an output depends heavily on the question, context and verification process around it.

The most durable outcome from the partnership would be students who can use AI constructively without treating it as an authority. That means learning to ask better questions, preserve their own reasoning, check important claims and recognise the role of human judgement. OpenAI and CodeAI have set out a broad programme with those goals. Its impact will depend on how well the advisory work, teacher resources and student activities translate into everyday classroom practice.

For families, the programme also creates a useful prompt for conversation: what should a helpful AI assistant do, what should never be delegated to it, and how can young people retain ownership of their learning?
