OpenClaw has released version 2.0, describing it as the largest update in the project’s history. The open-source personal AI runtime says the release began as an effort to make setup simpler and give its browser app first-class status, then expanded into a broader rebuild affecting installation, messaging, memory, skills, models, automations, native apps, plugins and security. For users, the practical theme is a faster path from installing OpenClaw to running an assistant that can take on useful work.

The project says the release combines more than 16,000 pull requests from 933 contributors, including 569 first-time contributors. It follows a nearly seven-week shipping gap, unusual for a project that had previously released frequently. OpenClaw explains that its team and contribution volume had grown beyond its existing foundations and release process, so it paused to rework both rather than ship a rushed update that risked breaking existing setups.

Starting with a simpler setup

Installation was the first priority. OpenClaw 2.0 starts from tools a person may already have, including existing ChatGPT or Claude subscriptions, API keys and local models. The project says it has cut or simplified configuration during the initial flow and moved remaining choices out of the way, allowing people to reach a first conversation earlier. Further setup can then happen conversationally, through the assistant itself, instead of asking a new user to understand every option before it becomes useful.

That approach matters for personal-agent software. A feature-rich runtime can be powerful but still fail to become part of someone’s routine if the first session feels like infrastructure work. By treating initial configuration as progressive rather than front-loaded, OpenClaw is trying to make the first useful workflow the centre of onboarding. It also brings responsibility. Connecting an agent to messages, email and other services requires careful attention to permissions, data handling and approval controls. OpenClaw’s earlier work on security and skills remains relevant here, particularly as users expand a simple personal workflow into shared or more autonomous work.
