ThoughtSpot has announced its support for the Open Semantic Interchange project's move into the Apache Software Foundation incubator under the new name Apache Ossie. The change moves the developing specification into an established open-source governance process while preserving its goal of making semantic models portable across data and AI tools.
A semantic model describes business concepts, metrics, relationships and rules that sit above raw data. For an AI agent, those definitions can provide the context needed to interpret a term such as revenue, active customer or churn consistently. Without a shared format, that context is often locked inside individual analytics products.
From industry coalition to Apache incubation
ThoughtSpot was a founding member of the Open Semantic Interchange effort, which it says now includes more than 50 organisations. Entering the Apache incubator means the project will follow Apache governance practices, including public mailing lists, open development and committer status earned through contribution.
Incubation is an important institutional step, but it is not the same as becoming a mature Apache top-level project or an industry standard with universal adoption. The specification and its implementations will still need technical development, community participation and evidence that different products can exchange useful models without losing meaning.
The new Apache Ossie name applies to the project as it moves through incubation. ThoughtSpot says the underlying community and purpose remain intact, with work continuing across areas including metric language, catalogues and ontologies.
ThoughtSpot plans a translation layer
ThoughtSpot says it is building a translation layer between ThoughtSpot Modeling Language, or TML, and the Apache Ossie specification. The intended result is two-way movement of semantic definitions, allowing models created in ThoughtSpot to be represented through the open format and compatible definitions to be brought into its platform.
The company describes this as an active workstream but gives no release date, product version, compatibility matrix or pricing information. Customers should therefore treat interoperability as planned engineering work rather than a generally available capability.
Translation is also more complicated than converting field names. Products may express calculations, security rules, time logic, relationships and metadata differently. A useful implementation will need to state which constructs map exactly, which are approximated and which cannot be transferred. Testing round trips without semantic drift will be critical.
Why semantic portability matters for agents
Analytics agents need more than database access. They need consistent definitions and governed context if their answers are to match the way an organisation measures its business. An open interchange format could reduce duplicated modelling and make it easier for agents, notebooks, dashboards and machine-learning systems to work from aligned definitions.
Portability could also reduce dependence on a single vendor, although that outcome depends on broad and faithful implementation. A nominally open export is of limited value if important rules disappear or if each platform extends the format in incompatible ways.
ThoughtSpot's involvement gives its customers a view of how the company intends to connect its Agentic Analytics Platform and Spotter assistant to the wider semantic ecosystem. The Apache move provides a more neutral home for that work, but it does not guarantee adoption by every data platform or agent framework.
The announcement is best read as a governance milestone and a product direction. Technical teams interested in Ossie should follow the public Apache process and evaluate real implementations when they arrive. For ThoughtSpot users, the decisive evidence will be a documented, tested translation layer that preserves business meaning and security controls across systems.
