OpenAI says eligible ChatGPT and Codex text generated in the European Union will receive an invisible watermark over the coming weeks in response to EU provenance rules. The company reports modest quality effects but acknowledges that text watermarks can be removed or weakened. Verification access will be restricted, limiting the signal to authorised investigations rather than public detection.
Anthropic says Claude will add imperceptible watermarks to supported generated text and signed C2PA provenance metadata to selected image files. The approach is intended to help identify content Claude has processed, while recognising that marks cannot establish authorship or survive every form of editing unchanged.
OpenAI has introduced browser and API checks for provenance signals in images and audio made with its tools. The service looks for C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks, but OpenAI stresses that an absent signal is inconclusive and the system is not a universal AI detector.
